Greenhouse gas net emissions for agricultural areas in Kokemäenjoki river basin. Calculated for Syke regional compilation of GHG net emissions related to land use.

The emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) were estimated separately for cropland on mineral soils and cropland on organic soils, in accordance with the national reporting of greenhouse gases (Official Statistics of Finland, 2019). The total emissions of CO2 for each field plot were calculated by multiplying the area specific emission coefficient by the area of the field plot. The area specific emission coefficients as well as the total emissions are shown here.

For cropland on mineral soils, the area specific emission coefficient used in the Kokemäenjoki river basin was the average calculated value for southern Finland for the years 2002 – 2017 (0.058 tC ha-1 yr-1) based on values in Table 3_App_6j (Official Statistics Finland, 2019).

For grassland and annual crops on organic soils, area specific emission coefficients of 5.7 and 7.9 tC ha-1 yr-1, respectively, were used as estimates for Southern Finland (Official Statistics Finland, 2019).

Carbon emissions were converted to CO2 by multiplying with 44/12.

The spatial distribution of mineral and organic soils in Kokemänjoki river basin was determined from the soilscapes of the national digital soil map (Lilja et al. 2017). Organic soils were here defined to include Umbric Gleysols (liejuiset) and Sapric Histosols (suovaltaiset), while mineral soils were the other mapped soilscapes (Arenic Podzols, Stagnic Regosols, Vertic Luvic Stagnosolz, Endogleyic Podzols. The digital soilscapes were available from 2010 (Syke 2010).

The national digital plot field register was used for cropland on organic soil to distinguish between grassland and annual crops. This register was available for the situation of 31.3.2017 (Syke 2018). All other crops than grassland (nurmet) were included in annual crops (syysvilja, kevätvilja, juurikkaat, puutarha).
